MASTER AJRAKH ARTIST

SUFIYAN KHATRI

Dye block printing is a beautiful process that has been around for many years. Sufyian Khatri, world class artisan and textile maker, carves his own woodblocks to create intricate and vibrant patterns for his hand-crafted textiles. Khatri’s natural dye block-printing studio is located outside of Bhuj, in the Kutch. In his studio, Khatri achieves rich tones and saturated colors using dyes from all organic and natural sources such as flowers, fruit, roots, etc.

Khatri learned how to carve wood blocks from his grandfather, Mohmed Siddiq Khatri, who had a large influence on shaping approach towards his craft. By the time Khatri was 17, he was apprenticing with his father and working on creating designs. Most of Khatri’s day in the studio is spent creating various designs that can be transferred onto the fabric he has created and dyed. Many of Khatri’s elegant designs incorporate geometric shapes and patterns that create a unique and energetic dynamic on each piece of fabric. Each of Khatri’s works is a unique work of art in its own right.
