Description

Scarf with traditional ajrakh palette of deep red and indigo blue. All natural dyes used to create this hand block-printed scarf.

This is a handmade block-printed silk scarf by Sufiyan Khatri, an expert Ajrakh artist. Ajrakh refers to a technique of block-printing natural dyes onto cotton and silk fabric using intricate geometric patterns. This art form is unique to the Kutch region of Gujarat, India as well as the province of Sind, Pakistan. Sufiyan Khatri and his family have been making Ajrakh for several generations. The name Ajrakh has multiple meanings: it derives from the Arabic word for the color blue (“azraq”) and also from the Kutchi phrase “aaj rakh” meaning “let it rest for today”–a reference to the many steps involved in working with the natural dyes that create this beautiful art form.
